Some very famous horses failing to make the frame in the Gold Cup put paid to many punters dreams during the 2014 Cheltenham Festival, and not even a win from Tiger Roll in the Triumph Hurdle could save them, since none of the top 3 managed to place – former Gold Cup winner Ruby Walsh even fell from Abyssial.
It was the Gold Cup though that was a massacre for Placepot bettors.
Bobs Worth was the favourite but didn’t even manage a top 4 spot, coming in 5th, while second favourite Silviniaco Conti came 4th.
A 20/1 outsider called Lord Windermere was the unexpected winner, and 88% of the units still in the bet were knocked out at this point with 2 legs still to go.
That meant there were just 431.25 units remaining.
Two races later though, and only 21.20 units remained after all was said and done, creating a very nice dividend of £44,616.30 per unit with the winners sharing a pot worth almost £1 million.
The 6 winners were as follows:
Race | Winner | Trainer | Odds |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Tiger Roll | Gordon Elliott | 10/1 |
2 | Lac Fontana | Paul Nicholls | 11/1 |
3 | Very Wood | Noel Meade | 33/1 |
4 | Lord Windermere | Jim Culloty | 20/1 |
5 | Tammys Hill | Liam Lennon | 15/2 |
6 | Don Poli | Willie Mullins | 12/1 |
The biggest individual share of the pot isn’t known, but there will certainly have been some very happy faces among the winners.
