How many of us place outright bets at the start of a season and watch them downed in flames after just a few weeks?
All we can ask as punters is for a decent run for our money… but over the course of a campaign, that can evade us in the most unexpected fashion.
But for one Betfair customer, a six-fold outright punt on the 2025/26 NFL season has landed to some tune – seeing them into the new year with a rather handy £174,000 win!
The regular season started in September and ended in January… but those four months of nail-biting tension would prove to be very much worthwhile for the savvy American football punter.
Divisional Drama
As you may know, the NFL is split into two conferences – the NFC and AFC. These each have four divisions, which are spread geographically across North, South, East and West divides.
The Betfair punter in question attempted to predict the winner of seven of these divisions:
- Pittsburgh Steelers – AFC North
- Indianapolis Colts – AFC South
- New England Patriots – AFC East
- Denver Broncos – AFC West
- Chicago Bears – NFC North
- Carolina Panthers – NFC South
- Seattle Seahawks – NFC West
The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that there’s seven teams on the list. Six of them won their respective divisions, but one of them – the Indianapolis Colts – did not.
But it was the nature of our punter’s staking that ensured that even with that failure, they still turned an almighty profit.
Rather than placing a straight seven-fold, they broke their betting down into smaller accas:
- 35 Four-Folds at £1 each
- 21 Five-Folds at £3 each
- Seven Six-Folds at £2 each
With a £2 seven-fold thrown into the mix as well, their total outlay came to £114. But with all of their individual selections priced at 3/1 or longer, they only needed one of their four-folds to land to turn a profit.
Well, it turns out that they would do a whole lot better than that…
Sweet Carolina
When the Chicago Bears lost their opening two games of the campaign, including a 21-52 demolition at the hands of the Detroit Lions, our punter could have been forgiven for thinking that one leg of their accumulative selections was doomed to fail.
But head coach Ben Johnson, in his first season with the franchise, was able to instigate an improvement that saw them win their next four games – as well as a perfect 5-0 in November.
The AFC North was incredibly close, with all four teams winning at least nine games, but in the end it was the Bears that came out on top with a 11-6 record.

The Seattle Seahawks, meanwhile, were unstoppable in NFC West. They racked up an impressive 14-3 record, topping the NFC Conference – they will head into the play-offs as the bookmakers’ favourite to win the Super Bowl in February.
There was incredible drama in NFC South. The Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons all finished with the same 8-9 record – but, despite losing to Tampa Bay on the final day of the campaign, the Panthers had a better head-to-head record in games against the Buccs and the Falcons… so they took the spoils at the top of the division.
That was a nerve-shredding end to the campaign that our punter could have done without!
Colts Gelded
In the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers were comfy enough – their 10-7 record was enough to land the divisional title, thanks largely to a run of four wins in their last five games.

The New England Patriots dominated AFC East, winning 14 of their 17 games, while the Denver Broncos delivered the same record on their way to claiming AFC West.
So six of our punter’s seven selections landed. Remember the combination of bets that they placed? Here’s how they paid out:
- 35 Four-Folds – £14,940
- 21 Five-Folds – £99,144
- Seven Six-Folds – £60,480
All of which adds up to a return of £174,564 from their £114 stake… nice work, you might agree.
And yet, it could have been even more incredible…
Their seventh selection – the Indianapolis Colts to win the AFC South – crashed and burned. They won just eight of their 17 games played, which resulted in the Colts finishing third behind divisional winners Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans.
But if the Colts HAD prevailed in the AFC South, our Betfair punter would have won a total of £660,000!
