For some parts of England and Wales, there was an almighty wind blowing across the land courtesy of Storm Anna.
Often, that can disrupt the flow of football games – even those played out in large stadiums are not immune to swirling winds that make it more difficult to pass the ball around… or even accurately lump it forward to the big man.
Such conditions can lend themselves to low scoring fare, although Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea were all able to score two apiece in their respective Premier League wins on Saturday.
The heavens opened on League One and League Two, meanwhile, as it rained goals… helping one Ladbrokes customer to land their rather impressive 6,500/1 acca!
As a consequence of which, they were able to turn their £5 bet into a payout of £32,506… adding their name to the acca punting hall of fame in the process.
Here’s the tale of the tape as the goals flew in for EFL fans on Saturday…
Score Draw
It’s a unique bet type: backing the draw and both teams to score. Perhaps the smart value would be to Dutch the 1-1 and 2-2 scores instead?
Either way, our Ladbrokes punter didn’t care. They backed the draw and both teams to score in a pair of League One contests and a solitary League Two encounter.
Plymouth Argyle welcomed Wigan Athletic to Home Park, where our punter’s chances looked slim with the game locked at 0-0 with 70 minutes played.
But then the home side were awarded a penalty – despatched by Lorent Tolaj, before Fraser Murray chipped in with an 82nd minute equaliser for Wigan. The game would end 1-1, sending Latics fans home happy as they embarked on their 285-mile trip back to Lancashire.
Meanwhile, in Berkshire, Reading were entertaining Mansfield Town. The visitors went a goal to the good as early as the seventh minute courtesy of Tyler Roberts, and remained so until deep into the second half – despite their hosts dominating the ball.
An inspired triple substitution by Reading head coach Noel Hunt saw former Premier League ace Matt Ritchie take to the field. And it was from a Ritchie pass that Jack Marriott was able to fire home the equaliser.
The final result? Another 1-1 draw for our punter to celebrate.
The hat-trick came courtesy of the League Two clash between Bromley and Tranmere, which turned out to be an absolute humdinger.
An end-to-end first half saw Bromley lead 2-1 at the break, before all hell broke loose in the second period. The hosts went 3-1 ahead courtesy of a Michael Cheek penalty, before Tranmere pulled one back less than a minute later.
The Merseysiders drew level at 3-3 with half an hour to play, before Bromley had Byron Webster sent off in the 71st minute.
They would, however, be able to cling on to the draw despite their numerical disadvantage.
Three in, three to go for the goal-seeking Ladbrokes customer…
Goals Galore
It was into League Two for the remaining picks, with Colchester tipped to beat Chesterfield – albeit with both teams scoring. And to say this selection went to plan would be an almighty understatement.
Despite being ten points behind their opponents before the off, Colchester tore into the game, opening the scoring after just five minutes and adding a second just eight minutes later.
Chesterfield pulled one back in the 20th minute, before Colchester scored not once but twice more before the break. Half time score? A cool 4-1 to the hosts.
This was dream street for our punter, who could relax as Colchester rounded out a mammoth 6-2 victory in the second period.
6 – Colchester United’s 6-2 victory over Chesterfield this weekend was the first time that the U’s had scored 6+ goals in a Football League game since a 6-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra in August 2018; a gap of 2601 days. Glut. #OptaOnEFL pic.twitter.com/a2UkFGLOpx

Cambridge also did the business, landing a 3-1 triumph over Crawley Town, so it was all eyes on Notts County as they welcomed Oldham to Meadow Lane.
The hosts were in no mood for mercy, running not a 3-0 lead over the visitors with just 50 minutes on the clock.
Could Oldham score the consolation goal that would seal our punter’s fate? Of course they could… you wouldn’t be reading this, otherwise.

Michael Mellon obliged for Oldham early in the second half, securing a once-in-a-lifetime £32,506 payout for the Ladbrokes punter from Walsall.
