Most of these blog posts cover a big win claimed by a single punter, but this one concerns the biggest tote jackpot rollover win since 2018, so the total amount won will have gone to a number of different punters.
As we all know though, Tote bets are paid out as dividends per unit, and with just 24.57 units left at the end, that works out as around £30,000 per unit to the winners.
Even if you only had a small bet on this one, you would be looking at a very tasty return.
Incredibly, at the beginning of the day the Jackpot stood at ‘just’ £220,000, but punters came in their droves to try and win the pot which had been steadily building for well over a week, and boosted the coffers to the eventual total of £740,573.25.
It looked as though it could be rolling over for another day after a surprise in the first leg saw favourite, Touchwood, pipped to the post by Mutahamisa at 7-2.
This knocked 80% of all bets out of the competition straight away, and the next leg was to do equal amounts of damage.
How the Races Unfolded
A 22-1 shot, Wake Up Harry, looked to cause plenty of upset in leg 2 but Bill Peyto beat him by a neck, knocking out 82% of the remaining bets nonetheless.
The next two legs were less brutal to those remaining in the race for the money, as Beating All triumphed on his debut with a strong race and a comfortable win, and then King of Tsavo left the other runners in the dust to romp home in leg 4.
Another upset in leg 5 saw 100-30 shot Mostawaa beat the most heavily backed horse of the day, Fantasy Believer, knocking out so many punters that only 379.99 units remained.
There were 14 runners in the 6th leg, but a massive 26% of remaining bets were on Tipperary Jack, the 2-1 favourite. Had he won, the dividend per unit would have been around £7,500. However, it was the experienced Soar Above, who was running at Kempton for the 15th time, who crossed the line first.
The final dividend per unit was £30,141.30 thanks to this unexpected win in the last leg.
